Currency

Russian currency is called ‘roubles’. 100 kopecks are one rouble. Banknotes come in 10 roubles, 50 roubles, 100 roubles, 500 roubles, 1000 roubles and 5000 roubles. In Russia, as in many other countries it is not recommended to carry large amounts of cash money on your person. So we advise our foreign students to open up bank accounts and create electronic cards. In this situation students can use any cash terminal. Also traveller’s cheques can be used. Money (Dollars and Euros) can be exchanged in almost any bank and foreign exchange throughout the city, in hotels, supermarkets, stations and airports. Photos of bank notes:

We don’t recommend that you change money on the street at money changers, as it is illegal and unsafe.

Commercial banks in Russia work with individual persons from 9.30 to 19-21 o’clock pm during the week and offices of the main state bank - Sberbank from 8.30 to 19.30 o’clock pm and but there exchange of money is usually at a lower rate than other banks. On Saturdays banks work till 13.00 or 14.00 pm, offices of Sberbank usually work till 16.00 or 17.00 pm. Credit cards and travellers cheques are not accepted everywhere, never the less the holders of Mastercard, Visa and Visa Electron can use various cash terminals, other cards are accepted selectively. To cash a cheque will usually cost 2-3% commission. You can transfer money through TT, Western Union and Money Gram.

Telephone

In Moscow, like any other European city, international public telephone call-centres exist . Usually they are located at stations, airports or at post offices. You may use their services. The cheapest and most comfortable way to make international calls is to use international calling cards, which you can get from banks, metros, telephone businesses and can use them in any call-boxes. Mobile telephones are most popular in Russia. Frequently the standard mobile connection is the GSM 900/1800, but there are various formats of GSM in Russia and abroad. Therefore we recommend that you purchase a SIM-card of a leading Russian company, like
MTS (http://www.mtsgsm.com/ ),
Beeline (http://www.beeline.ru/geography/for_guests_new.wbp?lang=eng&p=2 ) or
Megafon (http://english.megafonmoscow.ru/ ).

In Moscow telephone numbers consist of seven digits. International and local intercity calls have a set daily price from 8.00 till 20.00 pm. In the evening, night and weekends the price of calls drops by 1.5 times. The costs vary depending on your network provider. It is profitable to use internet-cards to call, as they make the costs multiple times less (by using the technology of voice decoding in computer settings – IP – telephones). The order of dialling, the area codes and the prices of calls can be found in any telephone directory. Internet cards can be purchased at special shops, which are located on the streets of the city.

In order to call to Russia, you should dial the code 7, than the city code (e.g. code of Moscow 495 or 499 and St. Petersburg 812), than the recipient number. In order to call abroad from Russia, you should dial the code 8 (operation code), than 10 (international access code), than the country code, then the city code and finally the recipient number.

In order to make international calls you can dial the number 8-194, or intercity calls 8-190.
