Moscow theatres A long time ago Moscow by the right won a status of the center and heart of theatre life in Russia. Today hundreds state and private theatres, concert halls and theatres-studios are located throughout Moscow.
Sources of dramatic art in Russia are rooted in second half of XVIII century when the first "serf" theatres have started to appear. In Moscow the state theatres have appeared at second half of XIX century – Bolshoy and Maliy.
Later, in 70th years of XIX century the so-called Narodniy theatre has appeared, it was public popular democratic theatre with classical repertoir intended for wide layers of Moscow. Bolshoy theatre, founded as early as in 1776, with Mariinsky theatre in St.-Petersburg still remains one of the basic world stages of an opera and ballet. Today the leading world stars, which have already become history of an opera as continuers of nice traditions of Moscow performing school, play on its stage. Besides that Bolshoy theatre was the place, where the world glory of Russian ballet has started.
